Officers were called to the corner of South 62nd Street and Chestnut Street around 11:30 p.m., the department said.

They arrived to find a woman with gunshot wounds to the chest and back, according to police. Later identified as 30-year-old Shatara Marell, authorities said she was pronounced dead at Penn-Presbyterian Medical Center.

Nearby on the corner of South 62nd and Market streets, a 33-year-old woman told police she had "engaged in gunfire" with the victim, officials said.

The 33-year-old surrendered her weapon to police and was taken to the Homicide Unit for "further investigation," the department said. Her name was not reported and police did not announce any charges as of midday Monday, Dec. 18.

The motive is still unclear, detectives added.
